How to Fire Smoke Mines? Step-by-Step Guide

How to Fire Smoke Mines?
Can you create a stunning show of colorful smoke mines by yourself? You certainly can buy them easily. But how do you ignite them all at the same time?
Colorful smoke mines have been a real hit in recent years. Whether at weddings, outdoor parties, or corporate events—they’re a true climax moment with undeniable WOW effect. They’re quiet, non-staining, easy to use, and incredibly beautiful. They’re a perfect alternative for daytime events that can’t host a night firework display.
If we're saying they're easy to use, does that mean anyone can organize a show? The answer is yes—and in this article, we’ll tell you exactly how to do it.
Do You Need a Pyrotechnician?
There are two sizes of smoke mines. The smaller ones have a 30mm caliber, called amateur mines. The larger 50mm ones are professional-grade. As you’d expect, 30mm mines can be used by any adult, while using 50mm mines requires a licensed pyrotechnician.
Here, we’ll focus on amateur mines. They’re classified as F2, meaning they're low-hazard pyrotechnic products with low noise. This classification confirms they’re available for sale and use by anyone over 18. Although they seem harmless, they’re still fireworks. That means you must follow the instructions. The F2 class assumes the product is safe only when used according to its purpose and instructions.
What Do You Need to Fire Smoke Mines Yourself?
This is a common customer question: can you just buy mines and go? And yes, and no. A smoke mine is a single-shot charge. Light the green visco fuse, and a column of smoke rises in your chosen color. Easy to fire one mine—but if you plan to fire many simultaneously to create a smoke wall, you’ll need more gear.
📦 Smoke Mines
Of course, you need mines. Plan your composition: all one color or a rainbow wall? Mines come in white, red, pink, orange, blue, dark green, light green, yellow, and violet—plenty of options!
Choose classic mines or ones with crackling—a small spark or burst at the end of the smoke column. Crackling is the cherry on top and a true WOW moment.
⚡ Firing Systems
Why mention systems second? Because the system depends on how many mines you plan to fire. Systems differ by “channels”—each channel connects to one mine. A 4-channel system fires four mines; an 8-channel fires eight; 12-channel fires twelve. You can connect multiple mines to one channel, but it's unsafe for non-professionals.
We offer systems with multiple receivers—for instance, a 12-channel, 12-receiver pyro firing system. This lets you place mines anywhere, without extra cabling. If one fails, the others still fire.
🔌 Electric Igniters
Now, how to fire them simultaneously? Smoke mines have green visco fuses for manual lighting. For remote ignition, use electric igniters—wires with a igniting head. Connect the head to the mine and the other end to your firing system. When you press the trigger, an electric impulse ignites the head, which lights the mine—instantly.
Igniters are single-use. When you buy a mine, buy its matching igniter. They come in lengths of 0.5 m, 1 m, 2 m, 3 m, 5 m. Choose length based on your system: for systems with multiple receivers, 0.5 m is fine; for few receivers and many mines, use longer ones.
🛠️ How to Set Up for a Smoke Explosion
Now that you have mines, a firing system, and igniters—you can set up.
-
Define a safety zone: keep mines and spectators well apart. Then add at least 5 m extra. Greater distance = less worry.
-
Mount the mines properly: they may look stable, but need firm support. Never stick them into the ground or stands meant for spark effects—they may tip over because of the upward thrust.
-
Proper methods: Use a metal, plastic, or wooden rod secured in the ground, attach the mine with tape or zip-ties. There are specialized mine stands, though those may limit creating a long wall. DIY holders work too, as long as they’re sturdy and hold the mine upright.
🧼 Will Colored Smoke Stain Clothes?
We hear this question every day. Does the smoke color clothes? Not if you maintain safe distance and use it correctly. Smoke itself won’t stain clothes. But colored residue may settle around the mine—not harmful and easily washed off. Too-close placement near a building may leave residue on walls, so stay at safe distance.
🎉 The Bottom Line: Have Fun!
We’ve stressed safety—and that’s important—but above all, smoke mines are meant to celebrate special moments. They bring smiles and stunning photo backgrounds.
Have fun, celebrate, and let colorful smoke mines add magic to your event!
