How to Create Colorful Smoke Shots for Weddings – DIY Guide

🎆 Colorful Smoke Shots for Weddings – How to Do It Yourself
Do you want to fire smoke mines on your own? Want it to look professional, but without investing in expensive gear?
Colorful smoke shots are the absolute hit of this year’s events. I can hardly believe there’s anyone left who hasn’t seen rainbow-colored walls of smoke on social media. But if you’re here and somehow don’t know what I’m talking about—read this article to the end. You won’t regret it!
What Are Colorful Smoke Shots?
A smoke mine is a combination of a traditional upward-shooting firework (pyrotechnic launcher) and colored smoke. To be precise, these are part of what we call single shots.
The mechanism is fairly simple. Once the fuse is lit, a propelling charge shoots the smoke charge upward, creating a beautiful, vertical plume of color. Simple, right?
Who Can Use Colorful Smoke Shots?
We’ve already covered firework classification in another article: Firework Certification Classes. To keep it simple, let’s divide fireworks into professional (F4) and amateur (F1, F2, F3) categories. Smoke mines exist in both types.
What does that mean in practice? Simply put—there are smoke mines you can legally buy and use yourself, and others that only certified pyrotechnicians are authorized to handle.
How to Tell Professional from Amateur Smoke Mines?
You're probably wondering how to distinguish them. The most visible difference is the size. While both professional and amateur mines launch to about the same height, their diameter differs significantly. Amateur mines have a 30mm diameter, while professional versions measure 50mm.
Also, amateur smoke mines are widely available online (you’ll find them here), even on marketplaces like Allegro. Professional mines are not as visible—and for good reason. You won’t be able to buy them without providing the necessary documentation. So, you don’t need to worry about accidentally buying something you shouldn’t.
Lastly—and importantly—there’s a noticeable price difference between the two types.
Can You Tell Which Mines Were Used Just from Videos?
By watching Instagram Reels or TikToks, it’s actually very easy to spot whether a smoke wall was created using professional or amateur mines. The end effect differs significantly—professional mines produce much denser smoke.
So if you see smoke walls offered by venues, DJs, photographers, or other wedding vendors (not pyro crews), in 99% of cases amateur products are being used. Does that mean the effect will look bad? Not at all—it will just be smaller and less dense.
If you don’t want to hire a professional pyro team, this is a great alternative. Yes—you can do it yourself. Here’s how.
DIY Colorful Smoke Shots for Your Wedding – Step-by-Step
Now that you know there are smoke mines you can buy and use, you’re likely wondering: Is it hard? Can I handle it?
Smoke mines use fuses to ignite. So firing several at once by hand? Not really practical. To launch them simultaneously, you’ll need to use a remote system with electric igniters.
These igniters are connected to the fuses on one end and to the remote system on the other. That’s how you can fire all the mines at once with a single button. Sounds complex? It’s not, really.
Where do you get these igniters and remote systems? You can buy them on our website in the Accessories section, or rent a complete kit—we created this option specifically for customers who want to do a show without buying all the gear.

You’re renting the set for 7 calendar days (5 business days). If the system is returned late, we deduct 50 PLN per day from your deposit. The rental clock starts when you receive the courier package.
